What Am I Doing Posting???

Why, oh why am I taking the time to write a post? Possibly no time management skills? Nope - just needed a break from some things Goat Hill! Not all things, mind you... just some! Because this post will of course have something Goat Hill, or "find-ish" about it!

So topic for tonight.... short and sweet..... (as I have zero minutos to do it)...

WHAT'S IT??

What in the world is this find??.... seems I will have to look it up, pose inquiries, or Google this item myself seeing as I'm nearly the only person that reads this blog!!  HHHAHAAA... and so, I shall!

It is made of English Ironstone - which is so very collectible. It has great patine (color).

See that gorgeous stamp (marking) above....

It is crazed too! No, not as in loony! Crazed means the crackle effect on the crockery. I believe in the glaze of the pottery. Some collectors really like this.... I think it adds a little something to the piece.

What purpose did this item serve? Surely it is very simple, yet I haven't a clue. You must twist the inner portion to line-up the notches in order for the lid-with-a-hole to come off...... see below >

There you have it... a quick post. So, what is this find??

By the way, I did accomplish price tags while I waited for the photos to upload. So, not too much time wasted!

Not Just Hangin'

Paint brushes, hot glue guns, drills and nails

Santa and his elves would be proud of my workshop

Quite an undertaking this Goat Hill show

Much has been done, much more to do...

Here's a peak at one of my fun projects ~

vintage hangers w/cloth buttons

Some of the FINDS I've sought out are old wooden hangers. I've stamped a saying on each - "Sunday Best"..  since the Abundant Finds theme at Goat Hill harkens to tent revivals out in the country. I figured folks would hang their "Sunday best" in the closet and don them only on special occasions....

Here's what I found on sunday best :
n.
One's best and often most formal clothing.
[From the practice among Christians of wearing one's best clothing to attend church on Sundays.]

********************************************************************
Picked up along the way too were a couple bags of fabric covered buttons. I've added a button to each end of the hanger to prevent clothing from slipping down and off. An added touch is the finish spray I coated them with to help prevent catches and pulls from the wood. Like shown right here >

needs ironing...

Another Sunday Best item are my hand-dyed vintage slips. These slips were not easy FINDS. It has taken months to gather a dozen or so. I have to say they sure are purty. Lots of colors. Each has a little piece of decoration. There are old brooches, millinery flowers and new feathery sprigs. I'll be sure to wear one come the opening of GOAT HILL!

Fall Flowers

Chrysanthemums ~

A quintessential autumnal bloom.....  well, maybe not when they're made from painted metal ~

I found a pair of these at Goodwill -while hunting awhile back ....

What do you think?? Too 1960's? or can you find the potential, just like me??? I've seen similar on a blog that I read. So I guess someone, somewhere is a fan.

Lovely Things Come

One of my nearest and dearest friends follows along on this blog. She also is one of the gals that is always eager to hear about my most recent finds.  Mary has a keen eye, for both beauty and bargain! I find her  enthusiasm about Goat Hill touching. Not everyone in my friends&family web is as crazy for this collecting business as we two. So, my fellow devotee of junking said she'd keep an eye out for any Tent Revival treasure while she was out and about.

Here's what she handed me when last I saw her ~

A stack of Bibles...
Two of them have sweet, intimate touches. Markings, verse and quotations written in the margins. They're also adorned with the most peculiar page indexes. Numbered metal pieces....   See here >

Lo and behold when I browsed the pages of one Bible the name of the owner was written inside the cover... and the funniest thing is - she's from the same small town in which I was born. Now is that strange, or what?

Willows, CA

Ask and ye shall receive!... or like me, have a friend like Mary and lovely things just come....

Slow Down

I've not been hunting for treasure much as of late...

Still have my Pops in the hospital....

I don't have much motivation.... or is it energy??

My little world is in slow motion....

I've slowed down, the hunting is slowed too...

Here are a couple of FINDS though ~

kiddie finds

Cow-baby boots!!

I 'spect the slow down is fine as far as the Goat Hill show goes. I should have plenty of treasure to fill my space and a little something to please everyone....

'spect the non-accumulation of further finds is also good for my house and my psyche....

WHOA NELLY!!   is this how hoarding starts???

I've got a couple more items to post later...

Hardware Store Style

For some unknown reason these finds remind me of gadgets that would be in a manly-type store. Hanging upon the wall for employees to use. Maybe in an old garage for mechanics to wash up? Possibly the back of an old hardware store?  I dunno.... just thinkin' - and where in the world do I come up with this stuff?

soap dispenser

fabric towel dispenser
Maybe I saw these in a bathroom somewhere along Interstate cutoff 505, or Hwy 99 as my Dad tootled down the road with his wife and kids toward his childhood home....

Every summer my parents packed all of us and the dogs into the station wagon for a visit to my Grandparents. The route to their home was North, and while we lived in the City - they were in an itty-bitty town in the country. The roads that lead to that place of fabulous memories were once very small. We had each landmark etched in our brain and likely our hearts too! Miles and miles of sun bleached landscape. Golden hills where very few humans resided. HOT as Hades and in those days no air conditioning! YAY!! we're now on I-5 almost to the town where Craig & myself were born. Landmark #1. A few more rounds of I spy and we hit Mom's hometown - a landmark we never miss. A predestined right turn off the main drag to drive by the shack (said with love & respect) where she was raised. Maybe even a cruise past her old, beautiful High School. Through the dusty little business area with long forgotten shops. We're getting closer!! A left turn onto 99 and into the home stretch. The ever popular landmark BIBLE QUOTATION sign whizzes past. Now is the time that we're on our knees in the back of the wagon.... we're turning right, nearly into the orchards. WE'RE HERE!! there's our sign that reads the town name, the bump of the railroad tracks at the dead end we go left.  Quickly we look down to our right.... YEP! there's enough water in the canal to go swimming - HOORAY! for that is what summer is all about!.... And after hours of wait here is the street that contains the homes that house the people that dwell in our hearts.... all the way down to the end, on the corner, on the left. That ever magnificent walnut stretched out forever in the yard. The dahlia and cactus garden too.

I have paragraphs and pages of memories to write. Maybe I'll do a little series all about this enchanting place. Including all of the people that I have a soft, weak spot for - the family that I dearly cherish.

But, to make this story come full-circle (which I like to do)... well, those finds pictured at the top?? ya know the Borax soap and running cloth dispensers... It's very possible I did see them in a hardware store, in a little place, in the middle of nowhere, on Main Street.  I think I just may have!

One of the first items of business once we arrived at Grandma & Grandpa's was to cross the street and grab our cousin to go visitin'! We have lots of family in that small place. We would walk to "town" - just us kids - and the first stop would be the Hardware Store. Our Aunt and Uncle owned it. We went to say our hellos and our we're-in-towns. The Hardware Store got the news  as we burst in the door.

Just maybe that bathroom in my Uncle's small town shop had just these sort of fixtures?

I've also found this little ditty. May not be 'bout a Hardware Store, but a small country shop, just the same. The photos are completely reminiscent of MY place.... oh the memories!

We too eventually said goodbye to the store. The building still stands; no longer housing manly wares. My Uncle passed long ago and retired from this piece of life much before that. I will have to travel back sometime - physically and spiritually.   I'd like to take that journey!

Art & Pantaloons

AHHHH WHAT???

PANTALOONS, I said!!   hmmm maybe I should go check that word. Sounds kinda prairie-like. Didn't find out too much from Wikipedia. Just another term for pants.

Just like knickers and breeches. HA! I like those two words.

Thrifting today I found art and said pantaloons.

 I love the painting.
It's titled : Dawn In The Harbor

by  Michael J Silver
Googled the artist. There are numerous Michael J Silvers.

Did  Michael J Silver, the ACTOR  have another hobby??

Acting ReelsPictures (head shots from his web page)

Keeping this painting until I found out

Mostly because I like the scene and it really does suit my style..... will show you why tomorrow

Cloche Love

Title: possibly should read - Cloche Overuse!!
Just in case you don't have my illness and may not know THY LOVELY CLOCHE - here is the definition:

original purpose - garden: see left lower corner
Cloche:
Garden Under Glass. The French developed the glass cloche, or bell jar, formed of a solid piece of glass shaped like a dome. The purpose was to protect an early garden plant from bleak cold and frost. This would hasten their crops to maturity. The Dutch and English expanded the idea with handlights, lantern style, faceted pyramidal covers made from glass panes and frames of cast iron. Today French cloches', Dutch and English handlights styles are much on the garden scene. As well as functional, they make a wonderful garden accent.

I've a love affair with cloche decorating! At last count I may have had 5 or 6.... or so!  I've found most of them at thrifty spots. It may be time to stop! Any further found treasures most surely should go to other homes.....

found honey comb

And more yet....

paper art under glass
So there you have it - a fetish... that's not too freaky... that I'm willing to share!

Ah yes! there is one more.. but you've got to go over to the other blog to see, as I've posted about the base that I've set the cloche atop ~

What I've Come to Find....

Come to find out - I'm not a very good gardener at all! Cause you just wouldn't believe what you find when you pay close attention out there in that big ol' plot.....

I'VE FOUND that Hubby and I can't possibly consume all of the fruit and veggies we grow.

It's a jungle out there...

I'VE FOUND that not only can we not eat all that we grow, but these varmints DO eat more than their fair share ~

monument to the "cute rat" population

Oh yeah, the squirrels know us by name, address and smorgasbord offerings!! They are our "cute rats" in residence! Think we've got a few of the non-fluffy tailed kind around too - what with Henny Penny and the coop next door. Ah well, such is life on the farm in the city! What's a couple more mouths to feed when you've got an ABUNDANCE of produce!

Anyway, back to the matter at hand...

I'VE FOUND many a half devoured fruit, nut, vegetable...

apricot

Every year we say that we'll do something to discourage our "guests".  Real gardeners, orchardists, ranchers know to net their crops. Some old-country growers tie up shiny objects in their trees. That's what our Italian neighbors (Henny Penny owners) swear by. Instead we just check out our tiny crop, shrug our shoulders, and say "Oh well"!... see this is how many apricots we'll eat this year ~

picked unripe to save them from inhuman consumption

I'VE FOUND that I'm sometimes neglectful of my guardian duties. If you've seen my other blog - http://www.abundantpicnic.blogspot.com/, you'll know  what I mean. After I posted Purple Rain I took a shot of the poor Plums' arm ~

ghastly, huh?

I'VE FOUND that I overcrowd, have far too many ideas for the space I have and HATE WEEDING!

I'm not the least bit discouraged though. All one big learning curve, this gardening, and I assume it will be a lifelong education. One of the biggest treasures I cherish is that...

I'VE FOUND - MYSELF! There is joy and satisfaction in touching the earth, planting a seed and watching it grow; in nurturing. The full circle cycle of being nourished from the items I've grown. And, of course of FEEDING the other creatures too!!

** Edited to add ** On July 6th I've linked up to Good Life Wed. on my favorite Aussie blog!!

Outta My Gord ?

Valley farmers offerings of fresh produce and assorted other items too.....

On my recent trip to Northern California I stopped at a produce stand and found these dried gourds. One of my plans for Goat Hill is to decorate with dried items that give the feel of FALL, as our show is in September. At home I've started some gourd vines of my own. I'm doubtful that they will be ready in time. So, when I found these strangely beautiful prizes I scooped them up!

Pretty cool, huh?... or am I out of my gourd?

She Is! Isn't She?!

Isn't she lovely? keep singing the tune the whole way through this post..... HA! just try and stop now....
you'll be humming it all day.....

Really, isn't she lovely?

treasure find of the day!!

Isn't she wonderful??

Isn't she precious?

Isn't she pretty?

Life does have many treasures to be found. Abundant in even the most obscure places! Nearly everything pictured here was garnered with politeness and a friendly manner. The dress form FABULOUS mannequin and a few of her cohorts were "dropped in my lap" finds. During tonight's walk in the hills, I saw an estate sale sign for an upcoming date. Still, I heard laughter and politely moseyed down the drive.... meekly (yeah, right! not I!) called HELLO, HELLO... "are you ready for early sales?". The family wasn't.. so they said - yet here I am with some of their past life sitting on my porch! We got to talking and next thing ya know they told me to shop and come back after my walk! Lucky girl, I am! Great people. Unkempt, dilapidated home up for sale to be torn down! I wish I had a contractors license. I'd be yanking french doors, windows, and built-ins galore!

Previously FOUND Find

Unsure that this find should be posted on this blog. Might actually belong on my personal blog Abundant Picnic. Surely there is no claiming that this item is a find of my own doing. Yes, as this particular day went, I did have a hand in finding and pursuing it.... yet..... OH MY GOODNESS! isn't it already renowned!

The morning was all our own. No hurrying. Coffee and the balcony awaited. Exploring the hilly beach communities in Southern California were the plan. Now, isn't part of vacationing pretending something, that you truly are not?? Yes? well then we were on topic by parking to explore the Ritz in Laguna Niguel. Lush grounds, dining areas fit for Queens and flowers for days!

can you tell it's a Mother's Day message?

views for miles... all the way to Catalina...

And as we wandered the halls of this richly adorned hotel, we happened upon unique artwork displayed upon the walls. Photography from quite a different viewpoint. The man behind the camera was in the water, seemingly being pounded by monster waves in order to capture a shot that was WORTHY and artistic. I happened to mention the poor fellow and his impending pummeling - when a zorie-clad, surf short wearing sweetheart decided he'd chime in and mention that he was the ONE AND ONLY man in the photo, in the water, nearly being crushed. WHAT??? he was he??? we were face to face with the artist himself... and his little son too!

surf shorts with his own artwork emblazoned upon them...
The friendliest, most Island-kind man with skills aplenty! His photos - we learned - have earned him awards and a place in the Smithsonian and other amazing institutes! He took photos with us. We went to his own art gallery later in the day. A treasure for sure!

this is Clark Little

Another find of the day was a nursery that was that and SO MUCH MORE!! Pics and a story soon to come!
